YAC 2015 Grants

The following students were involved in the 2015 YAC group: Seniors – Carley Suriano, Erin Knight, Kirsten Warren, Kyle Flickinger, Payton Salomon, Sumaiya Haider; Juniors – Brenna James, Madilyn Schweikert, Rayka Deveprasad and Cameron Jenkins; Sophomores- Nathan Green; Freshmen – Madeline Swanson, Courtney Arbic, MacKenzie Thomas and Kayla Andary.

In addition to their volunteer activities, the YAC students are responsible for reviewing and granting funds from the Chippewa County Community Foundation Youth Enrichment Fund.These students listened to presentations from nine youth organizations and approved seven grants.

The following projects were approve and received funding from the Youth Enrichment Fund held at the Chippewa County Community Foundation. The students recently delivered the funds to each of the organizations.

Child and Family Services of the UP – This project received $1,000 to be used for the basic necessities for the homeless youth who are moving into the supportive housing youth apartments.

Malcolm High School – This project received $1,500 to purchase flowers to help the City of Sault Ste. Marie with the beautification of Ashmun and Portage street. The Malcolm High School Service Learning Group partnered with representatives from the Downtown Development Authority to plant the flowers.

Friends of the Pickford Library – This project received $1,500 to bring in the My Adventure Theater to the Pickford Library Annual Fall Festival. This family experience will be the highlight of the Fall Festival.

Raber Township – This project received $1,500 to update the outdoor recreation area located at the Raber Township Hall. The main focus is improving the safety of the playground equipment for the children of all ages.

Camp New Day – This project received $1,000 to provide a week long camp to youth ages 9 – 14 from Chippewa County who have a parent that is incarcerated.

Girls on the Run – This project received $75 to support their Summer Solstice 5K Run.

Soo High Graduation Party – This project received $250 to support their year-end graduation party for seniors.
